Self-portrait

Hello, my name is Sonya and I make things. The continuum of my making goes something like this: printmaking, creative writing, knitting, jewelry making, gardening, ceramics, mosaic, and felting. As a frustrated sewer, discovering knitting in my late 20s helped link my creations with my love of textiles.

From the Marimekko bedspread my mother made, to intricate Ikat weaves from the Philippines, color and pattern were in my life from an early age in fabric form. Her own making was redoubled by that of my father, an architect by training and profession, but the man could lay a brick and swing a hammer. Do-it-yourself was and still is the reigning ethos.

I am a mother of three and am married to my webmaster. Our clan lives in San Francisco, where I teach knitting and fiber arts and come up with hare-brained ideas on a daily basis.
